La Baule, a dynamic spa resort

The development of tourism in La Baule (formerly Escoublac) began at the end of the 19th century, in 1879. This development was partly made possible by the exceptional setting of Escoublac station, a 700-hectare forest of maritime pines. Mr Hennecart and Mr Darlu, two Parisian representatives of a railway construction company, decided to buy 40 hectares of La Bocirc;le dunes. They also set up a company with the task of developing a spa resort.

The result was the creation of La Bocircle.

A large number of improvements were made, including a major avenue linking the station to the sea, a seafront promenade, two hotels and rental villas. This development lasted 24 years, from 1890 to 1914. In the meantime, in 1896, La Baule changed its spelling to La Baule.

However, it was at the beginning of the 20th century that La Baule decided to attract an affluent family clientele, particularly children suffering from tuberculosis. This is why a treatment centre for this disease was built, as well as a casino and luxury hotel establishments such as the Hôtel Royal.

During the First World War, La Baule welcomed many allies so that they could rest. The town of La Baule therefore experienced a major influx of Anglo-Saxon tourists à the end of this war. New hotels were built to accommodate them. The French also went to the seaside resort to forget this tragic episode.

La Baule became small and small between 1920 and 1930 thanks to Monsieur André a luxury resort with the construction of top-of-the-range hotels, golf courses and housing estates.

La Baule is now a dynamic seaside resort popular with the French, notably because of its 8km of fine sandy beaches and itsthalassotherapy renowned the world over. The Bay of La Baule is ranked among the most beautiful bays in the world.
